UPPSC Exam Pattern & Syllabus

Before we discuss the UPPSC Syllabus, let us first understand the exam pattern. The UPPSC PCS Exam consists of three stages:

  • Prelims – 2 papers – Objective type (MCQs)
  • Mains – 8 papers – Essay/Descriptive type
  • Interview

The candidate must clear each stage to be appointed as UPPSC Officer.

UPPSC Syllabus: Prelims Exam Pattern

The UPPSC Prelims is a qualifying stage to shortlist candidates for the Mains Exam. It consists of two papers conducted on the same day. Both papers contain MCQs.

Marking Scheme for UPPSC Prelims

  • 33% negative marking for every incorrect answer.
  • If a question carries 2 marks, wrong answer = –0.66 marks.
  • Multiple circles filled for one question = wrong answer.
  • No negative marking for unanswered questions.
  • Paper 2 (CSAT) is qualifying – minimum 33% required.
  • Selection for Mains is based only on Paper 1 marks.

The UPPSC Prelims syllabus is similar to the IAS Prelims syllabus. The detailed syllabus for both papers is given below.

  • Indian History – Ancient, Medieval, Modern
  • Indian National Movement
  • Indian & World Geography – Physical & Socio-economic
  • Indian Governance & Polity – Constitution, Panchayati Raj, Rights, Public Policy
  • Economic & Social Development – Poverty, Demographics, Inclusion, SDGs
  • Environment – Ecology, Climate Change, Biodiversity
  • General Science

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal Skills (including communication skills)
  • Analytical Ability & Logical Reasoning
  • Problem Solving & Decision Making
  • General Mental Ability
  • Elementary Mathematics (Class X – Algebra, Geometry, Arithmetic, Statistics)
  • General English (Class X level)
  • General Hindi (Class X level)
